I have been out of the the county and am late in writing this article so it is short. Our communications Director Henry Schotzko AD5FE has been very busy working with the OEM and developing relationships and communications checks with the county as well as several others. Bob Bennett AD5LJ has been very busy working on the club radio room. He has put in lots of hours to rearrange the room and install our new radios. Please have a look next meeting. OCTOBER LOCAL OSCILLATOR. K5XY I unfortunately left Las Cruces to visit relatives before I got the October local Oscillator published. It is difficult to do it by remote control because some of the submitted articles were unavailable remotely, therefore it will be incomplete in several ways. The txt version will be correct but the web and pdf versions will have parts missing. SEPTEMBER RACE AD5FE This month we had the opportunity to help out with a very different kind of “race”. Tim Borland from Los Gatos, CA. passed thru town, the 15th stop on his quest to do 63 marathons in 63 days. He is doing this to raise money and awareness for research for children affected with Ataxia-Telangiectasia or “A-T”. A rare genetic disease that is incurable. A-T which affects one in 40,000 babies born, causes loss of muscle control due to brain cell death. For more information, and to stay up to date with his quest, go to the web site, www.atcp.org. For this marathon, we used the MVTC course a full 26 miles long, which starts and ends at the “Field of Dreams”. Because of the small size the event and the fact that it took place on a Monday morning, Sept 17, it was only supported by John Beakley, WK5C, and me, Henry Schotzko AD5FE. I had John setup at the field of dreams while I drove along behind the runner, keeping the finish line updated on location and his progress. We started out at about 06:15 and got done about 10:30. ROSWELL SWAP MEET Coming up is the Roswell Tailgate/Swap Meet. This will be held in the parking lot of the Cahoon Park Clubhouse in Roswell on Saturday, October 6. Setup starts around 0700. Talk-in will be on the W5BLO repeater, 146.94, negative offset, no tone. For more information, including directions to the clubhouse, go to the CARES web site, http://www.dfn.com/pvarc/ares/index.htm. SOCORRO HAMFEST The annual Socorro Hamfest will take place on October 27 from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the New Mexico Fire Fighters Academy. The talk-in frequency is 146.68, negative offset, 100 Hertz PL tone. This event will include a VE session for all license classes. Registration for the exams will be from 11:00 a.m. until 11:55 a.m., with the test session starting at 12:00 noon. As a preliminary activity a tour of the VLA has been arranged for Friday, October 26, at 1:00 p.m. You need to be at the VLA site, located 50 miles west of Socorro, no later than 1:00 p.m. to be included in the tour. If you haven't been on this tour, you've missed a great experience. They may even show you where the lake was that Jody Foster had to deal with in the movie &q uot;Contact." A banquet is scheduled for Friday, October 26, at 6:00 p.m., but the location has not been determined as of this writing. For more information you can call (505) 835-3370, or contact ac5bx@juno.com or check out their web site at http://www.socorroara.org. UNCLASSIFIED for sale: receiver.
