The list of candidates is contained elsewhere in this newsletter. The nominating committee went to substantial effort to come up with the list of candidates and we all owe them a big thank you. I encourage everyone to attend the November business meeting and help elect the club officers for next year. The club Christmas party will be held this year at the Mission Inn, at 6:30 PM on 9 December. Read more about it in this newsletter. Most members know that we have a club net every Wednesday evening at 6:45 PM. The purpose of the net is to exchange news and messages of interest to club members. The net meets on the 146.64 repeater and everyone is encouraged to check in even if they don’t have traffic to pass. The number of check-ins varies from a minimum of 5 to over 20. For several years, Jim Leverett (WA2NIJ) has been net control. Last June we started rotating the net control so everyone would have an opportunity to do this. The initial plan was to have a different net control person each week, and a person would volunteer for the job. This plan proved unwieldy so we have changed to a monthly rotation, starting in December 2002. Marnie Leverett (KA2FVO) will take the net in December. We need volunteers for next year. If you are interested in being NCS for a month, please let me know. For the last two years, we have been experimenting with a club breakfast on the first Saturday of each month. This started out as a winner, we had good attendance and made money. After March of this year, attendance has been dropping. We have been averaging 4 to 8 paying customers most months and once in a while we get 10-12. Our break-even point is about 10 customers. To date, the club has LOST $98.05 on the breakfast. The club cannot sustain this and if more people don’t start attending the breakfast, we have no option but to cancel them. For many years, the club has carried a combined home owners and liability insurance policy. The policy covers damage to the club’s property through fire, theft vandalism, flood, etc. The policy also covers medical expenses for injuries that happen on club property and provides some liability protection in case of lawsuits. The premium for our insurance for the period Oct 2001 thru Oct 2002 was $520. Due to the 9/11 attacks, the insurance premiums have increased significantly. To renew our old policy for an additional year would have cost us $1610. We searched for a new insurance company and found one that offered substantially the same coverage for about $1100 a year, the cheapest policy we can find. The board authorized payment on the new policy for six months. The club must now decide if we can afford the insurance, which will likely increase in cost again in six months. The $1100 premium represents about 20% of our expected income for next year. I am going to seek some legal advise on what our vulnerabilities will be if we decide we can’t afford the insurance and I will present our options at the January business meeting. If you have strong opinions on this issue, please let me know. OFFICERS NOMINATED The following list is of the persons nominated for office in the club. The election will take place at the business meeting on November 25 at the club house. It is difficult to perserve formating in a text e-mail so this sample ballot is truncated a bit (the incumbants are not listed) and may not be in the most easy-to-read form. A formated table with more information appears in the web edition of the Local Oscillator which may be found at www.zianet.com/common/mvrc/index.html. The cost is $10.95 per person. You can pay at the Business meeting Nov. 25th. Or you may pay at the door. The meal will be ham and turkey, vegetables, salad, desert, and a beverage. Please come join us and help get the Christmas spirit going. MARATHON K5DI On the day we changed from Daylight Savings to Normal Sunday October 27, 2002 at 6:30 we Hams met at the Field of Dreams parking lot and we made sure all corners were manned and had a person, Kendall Mauldin, who was a roving radio. Don Shepan's son rode with his cousin who is a Sheriff Deputy so we had both the police and Ham Radios in the same vehicle. This proved to be a real asset. Both Marathon and a 5 Km Run were started at the same time about 7:00 AM. We had plenty of radio coverage for the 5 Km run and when the runners got home the radio Hams covering the 5 Km Run moved to their Marathon sites about 13 miles away from the start. Due to the distances involved we used the 146.64 Mhz Club repeater and it worked very well for the entire race. The Marathon runners were about to the river when the 5 Km race ended. We had a Ham at the turn around point on the river for the one-half marathon runners. Where the runners leave the river and run on the country roads of Mesilla, a runner collapsed and a driver informed a Ham of the fact and within 5 minutes the Police, Fire and Ham vehicles met at the hurt runner. The Fire truck took the person to the hospital. This was the only injury of the day. Those who worked this long race were: 1. Cash Olsen KD5SSJ 2. Carlton Talbot KC5NRM Position 3 3. George Kopp KD5OHA 4. Dennis Shepan KB5TPV 5. Terry Edwards KC5JCP 6. Marnie Leverett KA2FVO Position 2 7. Karl Hess WF5A Position 7 8. Robert Bennett KB5WHP Position 8 + 5K 9. Ted Hipkins W3FFB Position 10 NEW STANDARD POWER CONNECTOR WA2NIJ It is an article of faith in the Search and Rescue and Emergency Communications organizations that power connectors used for radios in the field should be interchangeable. If your portable power source dies, you should be able to plug in to any other source of 12Vdc. For years the two conductor Molex connector was the accepted standard. Recently more and more SAR and Emergency organizations are changing over to the Anderson Powerpole. At the ARES/RACES meeting at the recent hamfest in Socorro, it was decided that the Anderson Powerpole would be our new standard connector. The 30 Amp connector should be adequate for any ham radio we might take into the field. The 30 Amp size connectors will accept 12 gauge wire. The 15 Amp, 30 Amp and 45 Amp connectors all have the same housing and will fit together. The 45 Amp connector will accept 10 gauge wire. The connectors are unique in that they are hermaphrodytic. The silver plated contacts are self wiping. They accept solder readily. The connectors are modular, i.e. red and black are individual shells. They can be mated together to make a two conductor connector. Just make sure you get the right orientation between the black and red. Looking at the connectors with the cable side away from you, the tongues up and the hoods down, the black should be on the left. The letter "A" on the connectors should be right-side-up. You can make three conductor connectors if you desire. Red and black pairs can be stacked together. Radio Paul was selling a baggie of 10 pairs of the 30 Amp size for $10, so I bought a bag. So far I have done a few conversions and made up two adaptor cords to be able to continue using unmodified equipment with Molex connectors. I think the Powerpoles are a great improvement over the Molex. For more information on these connectors, try: http://www.andersonpower.com http://www.powerwerx.com You can find many more sources of information by doing a Google search on "Anderson Powerpole".
